I CONTROL YOUR FEELINGS

I control your thoughts. I also control your feelings and your emotions. Do I? Can I? Think about it: who controls what you feel? You might say: “Well when you say it like that it is pretty obvious, I do.” Do you? Do you really believe that? How many times have you said:

·         You hurt my feelings.

·         You make me angry.

·         I can't help the way I feel.

·         You turn me on.

·         You turn me off.

·         You make me sick.

·         You bring light into my life.

·         You made a fool of me in front of the neighbours.

·         If only you had remembered our anniversary, I wouldn’t be in such miserable mood.

If you do not control your thoughts, who does? Is it your partner, spouse, boss, the world, the stock exchange, your neighbour? If they control what you think send them off to therapy and you will instantly feel better.

Well let us do a quick exercise. It will only take a few minutes and show you who really is in charge of your thoughts, feelings and emotions.

Please get angry. Really, do whatever you need to do to get angry. Take your time. Stop reading now get angry. Do it as if there was a $1,000,000 prize money if you really get angry.

Now get happy. Really, do whatever you need to do to get happy. Take your time. Stop reading now and get happy. Do it as if there was a $1,000,000 prize money if you really get happy.

If you did do the exercise you will find that to get angry you had to think of angry things. You need to think of people, instances, circumstances, maybe the traffic, maybe someone who was mean to you in the past, maybe some situation you were powerless to get angry. In other words you go through a series of angry thoughts to get angry.

Then to get happy, you had to think of happy things. You need to think of people, instances, circumstances, maybe a special person in your life, maybe an event that meant you were on top of the world. You go through a series of happy thoughts to get angry. Now if you still have not done the exercise, PLEASE do it now.

When you do this exercise a few times, simple as it seems, you will get a sense that you can control how you feel. If having angry thoughts get you angry, if having happy thoughts makes you happy, then it follows that if you are feeling “X” than it is because you were having “X” thoughts.

You have the power to think whatever you choose to allow in your head. When something “pops” in your head, you choose to put it there, though you may not know why. You still have the power to make it go away. Therefore you still control your mental activity. Your thoughts are your own, uniquely yours to keep, change, share, or contemplate. If it indeed you who control your thoughts, then why choose self defeating thoughts? Change them, change the channel. Hang onto thoughts that serve you, discard the rest.

Here is another secret. It very hard to stop your thoughts. On the other hand it is very easy to change your thoughts. In other words, if you find yourself feeling lousy, low, frustrated, anxious, angry, fearful, jealous, upset, self pity, envy, helpless, impatient or disappointed imagine you have a remote control in your hand that controls the channel of your mind. Press a button to change to a different channel. It is that simple.
